Na imaginação e na confecção dos mapas, podemos articular três esferas da cultura – ciência, arte e vida cotidiana. Nas cidades, coexistem temporalidades, práticas e sujeitos que constróem uma atividade cartográfica informal que, por sua vez, é geradora de vestígios de novos imaginários urbanos que também conformam o que chamamos de conhecimento espacial. Ao investigar as espacialidades criadas, ativadas ou desejadas pelos vendedores ambulantes que caminham, todos os dias, pela cidade de Belo Horizonte, registramos o funcionamento discreto de uma economia, de uma logística, de uma rede de relações humanas e de subjetividades espaciais. “Uma cidade esquecida, tanto quanto são esquecidos seus habitantes ‘infames’ – homens sem publicidade, cidadãos sem fama”, como escreveu Maria Rita Kehl.

Cartography is simultaneously science, art, and daily practice. In the imagination and in the making of maps, we can link these three spheres of culture. In the context of Brazilian cities, many temporalities, subjects and urban images coexist and build an informal cartographic activity generating oralities and visualities that finally, we believe, contribute to shape the spatial knowledge. We investigate the spatiality created by street vendors who walk around the city of Belo Horizonte with their walking offices. Knives grinders, straw restorers, biju manufacturers and cotton candy vendors, lollipops makers, among other specialties, trace urban routes daily. The constant walking – a peculiarity in their work – can be understood as a subjective process of spatialization on the territory, producing discursive traces and ambulant landscapes. Maps – archetypal representations of space – may approach to the concept of performative mapping, building a new perspective on urban diversity and on epistemological possibilities.
